Wild and Krazy Kids @ Beauty Bar after the Giants win the World Series

Every Monday night for the last couple months now the WNKK (Wild n Krazy Kids) spin anything they want at the Beauty Bar on 19th and Mission in San Francisco. It’s usually mashups of hip-hop, metal, 80s you name they do it; they’re fuckin’ BADASS by the way. On this particular night, things were a little different.

I never thought I would live in a city that would win a world series in my lifetime. I have to admit I did “jump on the bandwagon,” but who wouldn’t it was more of a growing unity between anyone and everyone. No matter from what cultural background or monetary class, everybody seemed to get along. I can’t even begin to tell you how people looked like. It seemd they had reached some type of nirvana. All was good until later in the night when the riot police came out and started arresting citizens. Sfgate said it best, “San Francisco celebrated with Joyful Mayhem!”

I will let the pictures do the talking, I apologize for the blurry photos but no I was shooting without a flash. And I don’t have photoshop either. I can’t afford the damn thing. FREE TROY by the way he was detained that night! Enjoy!

It’s official, I have found a boot that I’m pretty stoked about. I was in Unionmade and had to pick these up. I don’t much on the backstory to the boot, but all I know is that it was relatively inexpensive. $180 is really good for a great boot.

Memphis to Indiana; Now what.

I left San Francisco last night at 1:30 a.m. We arrived in Memphis, Tennessee at about 7 a.m. Eastern time. I had my first meal in about 8 hours and it consisted of gravy, biscuits, American Cheddar and eggs. It did take a really long time, but what can you do; its the airport. The Blue’s Cafe to be exact. The one great part of the cafe was that upon entering the restaurant you were greeted by the host with a question, “smoking or non-smoking”.
This is something that reminds of good ole’ Guam where you are always greeted the same way no matter what restaurant you go to. I supposed it’s just an “island” thing. California and many other states have taken lots of initiative to create a “smoke-free environment”, but it still hasn’t hit all states.

So we’ve made it to Indiana only to be stuck in the hotel without a car the closest establishment of any significance is White Castle, an indoor pool and a whole lot of land.

The next move is to head to downtown Indianapolis. Hopefully, it will be better populated than Greenwood. One piece of advice for all you group travelers out there. Please make sure to sign and co-sign on the car rental and insurance. Because if you don’t, you end up in a 2nd rate motel blogging at 2 p.m.

Hiatus in Indiana!

The past weeks have been quite hectic for me so I apologize for not putting anything up. A few updates I designed a bag for Timbuk2, hopefully launching a ring line in the Fall and I am still writing my butt-off; so we will keep some good things coming your way. As for now, stay tuned there will be more things to come; maybe even a shirt.

In 2007, the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS), was in San Jose, CA for the last time. A group of local bicycle messengers and cyclists had organized a race down to San Jose from San Francisco for the event. This photo was taken the day of the event.

Naveen Malloy, a fellow bicycle enthusiasts, was one of the participants in the race. Malloy was wearing a pair of Nudie “slim jim’s” that he wore for about 6 months in the photo.

At the time, he hadn’t washed the jeans but since then he has washed them a couple times. Malloy had placed 87th in the race out of 160 riders. Riding a bicycle 60 miles is great start to breaking in a pair of raw jeans.

Railcar Denim from Los Angeles, CA

Steven Dang, owner of Railcar fine goods, came by to say hello. Dang was in town looking for a San Francisco account to carry his line. The collection takes inspiration from traditional 40s/50s workwear.

According to the company website, Dang was “working for the Los Angeles Metro, fixing and repairing passenger trains, he wanted to do something more creative that he had a great interest for. Building clothes. Taking his attention to detail in the mechanical and electrical world and transfering them to building high quality garments was a parallel transition. Hence, the name Railcar Fine Goods. Steven doesn’t say he makes clothes.His way of thinking is garments are suppost to be built. Every stitch has a function, every angle has a function and with fuction comes beauty.”

Dang was wearing a pair of Railcar jeans that were made in LA with “Kaihara” selvedge denim. The denim launches soon, but no exact date was discussed.

Ohio Natives

David Kasperzak (right) and long time friend Nate Reese (left) stop by the shop to check out some of the new jeans. Kasperzak is currently wearing a pair of Ironheart 301s model jeans and has been wearing it for 1 year without any washes.

Reese is wearing a pair of Levi’s 501xx reproduction (shrink-to-fits) and he’s been wearing his for 1 year and has washed them about 4 times. All washes were machine washed in cold water and were hang-dried.

Both from Ohio, Kasperzak resides in San Francisco and is pursuing his Masters in Art History while Reese is here on vacation.

Article in the Style Section of the SF Chronicle

It has been a long time since my last post, but I wanted to apologize to all my readers for being absent. I was recently contacted by the style editor of the San Francisco Chronicle to write an article about the underground denim wearing sub-culture that exists in San Francisco.

The article comes out next Sunday so you should definitely pick up a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle to check out a couple of my clients and friends that took part in this project.

On top of being busy with this project, my computer has recently crashed due to its old age and minimal hard drive. My next purchase will be an 2 TB external hard drive to help me with photo management for the site.

My update today is my current pair of Ironheart 301s, its been 6 months and if been able to see lots of change in the denim. Please excuse the photo it’s a little blurry since it was taken with my phone. I will be back with more jeans next week and thanks for reading.

Julian the jean-trepreneur,designer and self edge tailor came into the shop today to bring a couple pants he repaired. Here’s Mr. Dash wearing a pair of custom pants he made himself and he’ has been wearing these jeans for about a week now. He hasn’t washed them yet, but plans on wearing them for awhile before the first wash.
